Wildlife Recovery Fund Launched After Fleurieu Peninsula Bushfires
The Fleurieu Peninsulas bushfires in February have devastated native wildlife, with over four thousand five hundred hectares scorched and forty percent of Deep Creek Conservation Park destroyed. The Nature Foundation and Department of Environment and Water have launched the Wildlife Recovery Fund to restore habitats and protect species, particularly endangered birds like the Mount Lofty Ranges southern emu-wren and western beautiful firetail. Half of the emu-wrens swamp habitat was lost, pushing it closer to local extinction. The fund will support fence repairs, weed removal, habitat rebuilding, and long-term monitoring, building on past fire recovery successes. Deep Creek campsites and some tracks reopened, but Talisker remains closed. Donations are still being collected to safeguard these vital areas for the future.
