A Riverland woman, battling liver cancer, is advocating for Goat Island in Murray River National Park to be renamed after her late friend, Aboriginal musician Ruby Hunter. Hunter, born on the island in 1955, was a renowned performer and was inducted into the National Indigenous Music Hall of Fame in 2020. The island currently holds its name from a longtime resident, but Hunters advocates have been pushing for a change for four years. Hunter and her partner Archie Roach fostered over thirty at-risk Aboriginal kids in the Riverland and advocated for domestic violence survivors and the Stolen Generations.
