This week's EYE ON NPI looks at a nifty collection of RF reference designs and eval boards from NXP. (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/n/nxp-semi/rf-circuit-collection) RF chips are notoriously hard to lay out, there's a lot of details to worry about: trace widths, via placements, impedance mismatches...so why not use ready-to-go designs? NXP has published a bunch of different RF power amplifier designs, addressing a wide range of expanding markets from smart industrial applications to the 5G revolution NXP’s RF Circuit Collection is a comprehensive library of RF power amplifier designs, addressing a wide range of fast-growing markets from smart industrial applications to the 5G revolution. This collection can reduce development time with easy online access to proven designs for fast time to market. These eval boards are beautifully made, and have easy SMA connectors so you can plug-n-play different amplifiers based on your project need. For example, the highlighted board at Digi-Key is the NXP AFIC901N. The AFIC901N is a 2-stage, high gain amplifier designed to provide a high level of flexibility to the amplifier designer. The device is unmatched even at the interstage, allowing performance to be optimized for any frequency in the 1.8 to 1000 MHz range. The high gain, ruggedness and wideband performance of this device make it ideal for use as a pre-driver and driver in a wide range of industrial, medical and communications applications. The eval boards are not cheap - these are really high quality and high precision radio devices for medical, science, telecom and industry. The good news is that NXP has a free site set up to download the designs, so you can learn how RF layout is done which will help HAMs and other RF engineers. Hey folks, thought I'd post an update on what we're working on. We were asked to 3D print protective face shields on Saturday, March 21 2020. We were inspired by the protective face shield design from Prusa Research. We redesigned the parts using Autodesk Fusion 360 and made them parametric so we can easily adjust thickness, height, etc. https://www.prusaprinters.org/prints/25857-prusa-protective-face-shield-rc2 Check out our Layer by Layer tutorial to see how we designed it. https://youtu.be/BYPWB5-auQE The RC1 design takes about 2hr 14min. RC2 takes about 2hr 52min and the bottom holder takes 59min. We redesigned the bottom holder so it's longer and able to grab onto the sheet more effectively. We didn't have any sheets of clear PETG plastic so we used transparency film. We used our CriCut vinyl cutter to cut out the shield using the PDF template from Prusa Research. We're taking the proper precautions to sanitize the parts before shipping them out. The acronym NPI stands for New Product Introduction and sometimes you’ll also see NPD (New Product Development). EYE on NPI will showcase, spotlight, and discuss the latest new products and announcements from the entire component industry. EYE on NPI will help engineers go from prototype to market and get important information on pricing and availability. The more you know, the more you can reduce time-to-market, the more you increase the quality of the product(s) and reduce production costs! Adafruit releases dozens of new products per month. We live, eat, and breathe datasheets and we wanted to share our NPI process with everyone: how we get to market quickly, and what the latest NPIs are out there. ====== This week’s EYE ON NPI takes a peek at the new chips coming from Nordic Semi – makers of some great wireless chipsets and their new major chipset release, the nRF5340! We’ve been huge fans of the nRF5 series, which has combined a powerful microcontroller and a 2.4GHz BLE radio. We started with the nRF51 which we’ve used in our popular Feather 32u4 Bluefruit LE board, and then moved onto the nRF52 series which is used in the Circuit Playground Bluefruit. So naturally we’re very interested in the latest major version of this family – the nRF5340. Please note: this is a really new NPI, so new that this part is an engineering sample and is not fully tested. There may be silicon bugs that will be fixed in the final release. Even if it’s not ready for mass manufacture, it’s a great time to start prototyping or developing with it. According to Nordic: The nRF5340 is the world’s first wireless SoC with two Arm® Cortex®-M33 processors. The nRF5340 is an all-in-one SoC, including a superset of the most prominent nRF52® Series features. Features like Bluetooth® Direction Finding, high-speed SPI, QSPI, USB, up to 105°C operating temperature, and more, are combined with more performance, memory and integration, while minimizing current consumption. The application processor is optimized for performance and can be clocked at either 128 or 64 MHz, using voltage-frequency scaling. It has 1 MB Flash, 512 KB RAM, a floating-point unit (FPU), an 8 KB 2-way associative cache and DSP instruction capabilities. The network processor is clocked at 64 MHz and is optimized for low power and efficiency (101 CoreMark/mA). It has 256 KB Flash and 64 KB RAM. The most interesting thing about this new chip is how powerful the processors are – they’ve upgraded the nRF52840’s Cortex-M4 to two M33’s, and doubled the max clock speed to 128 MHz. The second processor will be useful for products where you have very specific real-time requirements, as the Nordic radio software (SoftDevice) can interrupt user code to handle incoming packets. It’s better if you can dedicate one core to handling all radio requirements, and any secure/encryption/sync/authentication work, so the main thread can run on another processor to handle user interface requirements. This chip is powerful enough to run DOOM You can pick up nRF5340 chips right now from DigiKey, and don’t forget to also grab an nRF5340 preliminary dev kit as well. We’re a fan of the Nordic DK’s: they’re very complete and easy to use with built in J-Link program/debug, just-the-right-amount of peripherals, and power monitoring support, all for a really great price. Complete your Wizard or Druid cosplay with a glowing, ever-burning fire staff. This prop is lightweight and sturdy, and made from inexpensive materials. You don't need much in the way of sculpting ability to create something organic and magical, that looks as though it was cut from the Yggdrasil with an enchanted axe and then imbued with fires from the Mines of Moria before serving the White Witch Jadis for a century or two and then falling into your hands at the end of a rollicking adventure. You'll need some soldering ability, a little creativity, and a willingness to get a bit messy. You can upload our CircuitPython code as-is, or it's easy to change the colors and sound effects to complement your own Wizard or Barbarian character. “EYE on NPI” with Maxim's Himalaya uSLIC Step-Down Power Module https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/m/maxim-integrated/himalaya-uslic-step-down-power-module What is EYE on NPI? The acronym NPI stands for New Product Introduction and sometimes you’ll also see NPD (New Product Development). EYE on NPI will showcase, spotlight, and discuss the latest new products and announcements from the entire component industry. EYE on NPI will help engineers go from prototype to market and get important information on pricing and availability. The more you know, the more you can reduce time-to-market, the more you increase the quality of the product(s) and reduce production costs! Adafruit releases dozens of new products per month. We live, eat, and breathe datasheets and we wanted to share our NPI process with everyone: how we get to market quickly, and what the latest NPIs are out there. We're always on the lookout for new techniques and parts for power supplies and management - so this week's EYE on NPI takes a look at some MAXIM integrated buck converter chip/mini-modules, which they call the Himalaya uSLIC™ Step-Down Power Module set. These tiny and easy-to-use modules take 4.5-36V DC in and give you 0.9V-12V adjustable output at 1 Amp with no fuss. "The Himalaya series of voltage regulator ICs and Power Modules enable cooler, smaller and simpler power supply solutions. Easy-to-use, step-down power module that combines a switching power supply controller, dual n-channel MOSFET power switches, fully shielded inductor, and the compensation components in a low-profile, thermally-efficient, system-in-package (SiP)." Power supplies are the silent workhorses of electronics design - they take the abuse of over/under voltages, short circuits, noisy and unstable inputs and do all that clean up for you so you've got clean regulated power. They're not glamorous, but a good power supply setup will make the rest of your design a breeze. Bad power supplies will give you very confusing results - flaky wireless, bad sensor readings, brownouts, or worse - damaged components! We've seen some of these 'all in one' integrated buck converters before, they're sometimes even sold as pin-compatible 'LM7805' replacements. In particular we're seeing these pop up on small development, wearables or eval boards - partially because they're so small and also because they're incredibly easy to use. You only need half-a-dozen passives to get the MAXM17632 going, even less for the fixed-output MAXM17630 and MAXM17631. No inductors, MOSFETs, compensation path - everything's internal. You can get A few external ceramic capacitors and resistors are all you need. It even comes with some nice extras like an under-voltage lockout, adjustable switching frequency (400KHz - 2.2MHz) and a powergood/reset output that can keep your system from booting up during start-up. These modules are tuned and efficient, especially since every component is tightly integrated, so you will reduce thermal emissions as well.
