Ep 262Acoustic Guitar Cross Picking in 5 minutes ★ Acoustic Tuesday 255

Learn cross picking on acoustic guitar in just 4 easy steps with this simple, easy-to-use approach! Cross picking is a picking pattern that involves skipping strings in your picking pattern. It doesn't use fingers, instead opting for a pick. It's a great way to get that cascading finger pick sound but with more bite! The hardest part of cross picking lies in switching pick directions. While normal strumming strikes all the strings in one direction, cross picking has you alternating pick direction with each string you strike. To help you learn how to cross pick, I've created 4 easy steps — think of them as checkpoints or mini-lessons. Once you feel good at one part, move on to the next one! On one final note, don't forget to check out the cross picking musicians that I've listed in the episode. They're incredibly talented and worth giving a listen to if you're interested in learning this great strumming pattern. Ep 257Two Hand Tapping on Acoustic Guitar Made Easier ★ Acoustic Tuesday 250

Two-hand tapping on guitar isn't easy. It's even harder on acoustic guitar. But what if there was an easy, step-by-step guide for learning how to tap on acoustic guitar? Tapping on guitar is an advanced technique. It provides a bright, ethereal sound (as long as you're not using overdrive or distortion!). And, for most of the guitar's existence, it's been used primarily on electric guitar. It's that classic shredding sound that was popularized by Eddie Van Halen and other electric guitarists. But what if the same technique is applied to acoustic guitar? On today's episode, you'll get an easy step-by-step guide to learning how to two-hand tap on acoustic guitar. It requires a good amount of dexterity and finger strength, but Tony's Acoustic Challenge members should be up for the challenge. By tuning down the guitar, breaking the technique into chunks, and creating actionable steps where you feel confident in your playing, I hope you can successfully apply these techniques to your playing. It's a bit of a specialized skill, but you never know what kind of creative horizons you may expand. Two-hand tapping is a fairly new technique for acoustic guitarists. If you want to hear more examples of this technique, I highly recommend you visit the modern fingerstyle acoustic guitar genre. Many of the players in this style are virtuosos, but you'll get a taste of what kind of sonic possibilities exist. Ep 25510 Best Epiphone Acoustics? (2022) ★ Acoustic Tuesday 248

Epiphone guitars have quite the reputation. But does their street cred match up with how they sound? Check out my list of the 10 best Epiphone acoustic guitars ever made. @OfficialEpiphone guitars are kinda known as the less desirable branch of the Gibson family. They aren't as expensive, are made with cheaper parts (usually), and don't have the same prestige as a Gibson guitar. But does that really matter? Doesn't it all come down to the sound? Fortunately for you, that's probably the biggest consideration I have when I'm making recommendations. So, after reviewing thousands of guitars in my lifetime, I've gained a certain understanding of what to look for in a guitar. As a result, this is my list of the 10 best Epiphone guitars out there. Ep 254Why Closed Position Patterns are a Game Changer ★ Acoustic Tuesday 247

Learning closed position, moveable chords can unlock your understanding of the fretboard. More importantly? You will be able to play a song or lick in any key, anywhere on the fretboard. In this lesson behind the lick, you'll learn all about closed position moveable patterns. Closed position movable patterns involve NO open strings. That means that you can easily move the pattern to a different key without a capo or a changing your tuning. Closed position patterns truly unlock the fretboard for you. When you play in closed position, you learn a pattern rather than specific frets or open string patterns. This means that you can play in a variety of keys. When you start playing with others or you want to sing along, you'll find you mind need to play in different keys. If you've learned a scale, chord pattern, or lick in closed position, this transition will be very easy. I want you to try learning closed position. You may find that you'll have even more flexibility on the fretboard. Featured in this Episode - Martin Guitar - Ear Trumpet Labs

Drop D tuning can open up an entire new sonic soundscape, but do you know how best to practice your shapes and scales in this alternate tuning? On today's episode of Acoustic Tuesday, you're going to get a lesson behind the acoustic guitar lick of the week. Every Tuesday, I offer you a quick lesson on learning an awesome lick. But this week, you'll get to see the theory, rationale, and benefits behind learning the lick this week. Specifically, this lick focuses on drop D tuning for the acoustic guitar. Ep 250BEST Bottleneck Slide Guitar Buying Guide (2022) ★ Acoustic Tuesday 243

Ever wondered what slide is the best for playing slide guitar? Brass? Bronze? Glass? Heavy? Light? All this will — and more — will be covered in this episode of Acoustic Tuesday! Bottleneck slides are perhaps the most important piece of gear for playing slide guitar...besides your guitar, of course! That's why I've dedicated a whole episode to discussing the importance of picking out the right slide. There are so many choices out there. It can be totally overwhelming. And sometimes, when you're overwhelmed, you just go with the cheapest price. I'm here to advise you against doing that. Instead, take a look at these 10 slide manufacturers to see what to look for in a high-quality slide that can work within your budget. I'll also add that I have a preference for bronze or brass slides. I explain why in the video, but it ultimately boils down to a combination of tone and feel. I really love the heavy feeling of a slide that sits comfortably on my finger and has enough weight that it isn't bouncing off the strings. In addition to talking about slides for slide guitar, you'll also hear from a TAC Family member and Guitars For Vets member on how she is able to achieve all of her guitar goals this year. Ep 249ULTIMATE Resonator Guitar Buying Guide (2022) ★ Acoustic Tuesday 242

Resonator guitars have so many myths tied to them. They have to be played differently. They're way too expensive. They are only good for one style. But is any of this actually true? On today's episode of Acoustic Tuesday, you'll get a chance to see my top 10 favorite resonator guitars. This list is made up of many different resonator guitars at different price points. Every guitar on this list is a great bang for your buck regardless. I love resonator guitars because they have some great punchy tones. Like a banjo, the decay on resonators can be really quick, but as a soon as you add a slide, the tone morphs so much. But this brings us to the first common misconception: resonators have to be played with a slide. This couldn't be farther from the truth. Resonator guitars can be played like a normal guitar. Sure, using a slide gives it a very bluesy or country sound, but in reality, they sound just as good without a slide. You don't need any different techniques really. There's also a perception that resonator guitars are expensive. Well, I'm here to tell you that there are so many options that don't have to break the bank. Ep 246How to Play Harmonics on Acoustic Guitar ★ Acoustic Tuesday 239

Harmonics on acoustic guitar can be tricky! You can't rely on the gain of your amp, which means accuracy is super important. This episode will cover everything you should practice to start playing harmonics on acoustic guitar. Before we go any further, you might be wondering what harmonics are. Harmonics create a bell-like tone you can make on your guitar by gently placing your finger above certain positions on the fretboard and plucking the string. It creates an overtone on the guitar. The end result is an airy, bell-like tone. Between natural and false harmonics, there's a whole sonic landscape to discover with harmonics. The only problem is that playing harmonics on an acoustic guitar is much harder. Electric guitars benefit from having amplification, which means harmonics can be played even if you miss the sweet spot of where the harmonic is. Natural harmonics are located on the 12th, 5th, and 7th frets on a guitar. There are other locations, too, but these are the common places guitarists play natural harmonics. These are considered the easiest harmonics to play on your guitar. Additionally, there are also false harmonics, located all over your fretboard. Playing false harmonics requires accuracy, a gentle touch, and a little bit of trial-and-error. Be sure to catch this whole episode to see how you can get better at playing harmonics on acoustic guitar! However, the sooner you can practice them, the more your sonic landscape will really open up. So, whether you're a beginner or advanced guitar player, you're going to learn so much from working on your chord mods. Chord mods on guitar allow you to add melody to chord playing. In this video, we're looking at the 10 best signature guitars. There's a perception that signature guitars, also known as spec guitars, are only for really serious guitarists. That's because most of the guitars are 1) expensive, 2) built to an artists' specifications, 3) use high-quality materials. No expenses spared. While there are many that are expensive, I have a couple on this list that are totally for beginners. This is a great opportunity to hear some of the best offerings from guitar makers like Martin, Taylor, Thompson, and so many more. If you're excited to see how you can emulate a certain artists' sound, or you just want something that is vetted by your favorite artist, this episode is totally for you! Now, I have to warn you. There's a fairly large plot twist at the end of this episode. So, in the comments below, be sure to let me know what you think my number one pick is. Ep 240Why Does THIS Simple Scale Pattern Work? ★ Acoustic Tuesday 233

Guitar scales are incredibly important. But they're also a little overwhelming. Why are there so many? Why is it all complicated? Does it have to be? This episode is all about a acoustic guitar scale that I think simplifies a lot of things. To illustrate this, we'll start by learning a lick in the key of E. I'll continue by illustrating how and why this lick works. You'll see what the lick teaches about the horizontal scales, how to apply the lick in your playing, and so much more. Think of the lick as the creative launching pad and the lesson behind it as the secret sauce that makes everything work. The episode is part of a new series called Lesson Behind the Lick. I hope you like this format and find that it helps contextualize the licks. If you enjoy this and want to see more, be sure to leave a comment and let me know! Ep 239Play Slide Guitar in 6 Easy Steps [How To & More!] ★ Acoustic Tuesday 232

Slide guitar is zippy, twangy, and classic. On today's episode, you're going to learn how to use a bottleneck slide to bring those classic tones to your acoustic guitar. In 6 easy steps, I'll show you how to hold the slide properly, which tunings to use, and how to make single-string melodies! Slide guitar is the open sky where the buffalo roam and where the waves lap the shore at sunset. It evokes a different time and place that the all-too-digital world we live in now. I've always been drawn to this sound and I can't wait to share it with you! When I first started playing slide guitar, I thought that a slide was used for barre chords. Almost like a capo! Little did I know, the slide was for so much more than that. I personally prefer using lap slides where you can see the fretboard more easily. Bottleneck slides are typically more accessible to players, especially if you are transitioning between playing slide and playing normally. Slide guitar unlocks new sonic possibilities for your playing. If you are in a guitar rut, I highly recommend you pick up a slide. It will make you see the fretboard in a new way, and have you seeing new patterns and possibilities. Be sure to watch the video to see my full thoughts on slide material (glass vs. metal vs. ceramic), which tunings to use, and how to properly work your slide!

Ep 235Learning Guitar from Banjo Legend Earl Scruggs ★ Acoustic Tuesday 228

What can guitar players learn from one of the best banjo players of all time? In this episode, we'll take a closer look at Earl Scruggs, his banjo technique, and how guitar players can apply these techniques to expand their tonal horizons! I am a huge Earl Scruggs fan. His banjo playing definitely cements him in the hall of fame of banjo musicians. Earl Scruggs was filled with wisdom, which is why I wanted to dedicate a whole episode to the legend. Even though he mostly played banjo, I think there are so many life and technique lessons to learn from Earl Scruggs. One of the inspirations for this episode came from a video clip of Earl Scruggs. In the footage, he swaps his banjo for a guitar. Without hesitation, Scruggs was able to dive right into the role of rhythm guitar. Scruggs' flexibility and rhythmic prowess allowed for spontaneity and collaboration — something I think all of us could benefit from learning! As far as specific technique we can learn from Earl Scruggs' playing, I really want to emphasize alternate chord voicing. Additionally, his use of the Carter scratch and the "rolls" in the picking hand can open up a wide variety of tones and rhythms for you to explore. If you have any questions about Earl Scruggs, the techniques he used, or anything else, be sure to leave a comment on this episode! I always love to hear what you thought about this episode of the Acoustic Tuesday, and I look forward to reading your comments! Ep 234How to Use Staccato on Guitar Like a Pro ★ Acoustic Tuesday 227

Looking for a technique that can help you stand out with relative ease? Try staccato playing with this in-depth lesson! Add staccato playing to your tonal toolbox and start jamming away! This episode will dive into a technique called staccato playing. Staccato playing involves using short, punchy notes to create rhythmic drive and tonal separation from other notes. If you've never heard or tried this technique, don't worry — I'll show you how to both use the technique and how to apply it to your playing. I love staccato playing because it allows rhythmic playing. It has a choppy sound that can give you more options to approach playing a lick or song. When you add staccato to a single-note phrase, it stands out so much more. In addition to learning how to use staccato playing, I'll also show you how staccato notes can help you control dynamics in your playing. Because it has a loud but punchy tone, you can insert notes without burying others you are playing with. If you're worried about this being a music theory lesson, you can rest assured that this isn't about music theory. Rather, this lesson focuses on technique rather than note choice. I'll offer plenty of examples of how to use staccato playing, so be sure to leave a comment on which example was your favorite or most helpful! Ep 232How Drone Strings Can Unlock Your Guitar Playing ★ Acoustic Tuesday 225

Drone strings aren't used by many guitar players, but it is a crucial tool for helping you practice and even perform! This video will cover all the basics of using drone strings, when to use them, and how to use this technique to the greatest effect. I love drone strings because they add so much body to your playing. Depending on what key you're playing in, drone strings can make a huge difference. They can fill out your sound, give you a nice bass-y foundation, and make your playing much more musical. One of the easiest ways to start experimenting with drone string playing is tune your low E string to a low D. Then, you can play an D minor scale on the middle D string. This can give you a load of melodic phrases. You can apply this technique to any of your open strings. But there's one important thing to remember: drone strings don't have to be lower than the string your playing melody on. You can use an open G string and play the G minor or major scale on the A string. My hope is that you walk away from this episode feeling a little more inspired to use drone strings. If you're a guitarist who plays by yourself, drone strings really add depth to your playing. It sounds, almost, as if there was another guitar player backing you up! So go ahead and try to add some drone string playing to your guitar routine this week. It might just become your new favorite technique. No, we're not covering Bob Dylan or Simon & Garfunkel. We're going deeper in the vault. So, are you ready to experience the 10 best, rare acoustic albums from the 1960s? The '60s were an incredible decade for music. There was so much change, so much turbulence that fueled creative expression and artistic freedom. Some of these artists and albums you may have heard of. Some of them may be completely new to you. And that's okay! Part of my mission is to inspire and help you live your best acoustic life. Ep 230How to Hybrid (Chicken) Pick in 4 SIMPLE Steps ★ Acoustic Tuesday 223

Hybrid picking, also known as Chicken picking, is a tricky picking technique. But it doesn't have to be. This episode will break down this complex technique into 4 simple steps so you can add this technique to your acoustic guitar repertoire! The basic premise of hybrid picking is to use both your flatpick and your fingers to play a picking pattern. The result is a super-fast, textured, and pronounced sound that is different from both fingerstyle and flatpicking. It's extremely fun once you get it under your belt, and it's sure to turn some heads when you bust it out. Hybrid picking is difficult because it requires you to maintain control over your flatpick strokes while still executing a fingerpicking pattern. However, when done properly, you'll be able to play some great riffs. For example, this week's TAC Guitar Lick Challenge uses hybrid picking! By the end of this episode, you'll have four actionable steps to work towards to help you hybrid pick. So, whether you're just looking to add a new technique to your arsenal or there's a specific song that requires you to hybrid pick, I hope this lesson was helpful for you! The techniques he used changed many genres and inspired generations of guitarists — myself included! Doc Watson also had some unique approaches to music. I love the way he weaves jokes into he sets, never afraid to use humor. Doc wasn't afraid to tell authentic stories. I've created this episode as a retrospective to spark reflection. Ep 224Sustainable Guitars — Is THIS Our Future? ★ Acoustic Tuesday 217

In this episode, we explore the idea of sustainable guitars — something guitar geeks should be thinking about for the future...here's why. We'll take a look at some great companies like Taylor Guitars and Tom Sands that are creating instruments with sustainable materials such as reclaimed wood and ethically sourced materials, and more. I've always been fascinated by tone woods. From their acoustic properties to their aesthetic qualities, I loved learning about different kinds of tone woods. But recently I've been thinking more about where tone woods come from, how they're harvested, and what us guitarists can do to make sure there are guitars for future generations. This video won't seek to provide definitive solutions to the issues of deforestation or other negative aspects of the guitar industry. Instead, I want this to be the launch-pad for further conversations. Feel free to share resources, makers, luthiers, and others who are helping ensure that there are guitars for our grandchildren and their grandchildren to play.

Ep 221The Dark Side of Streaming Your Music ★ Acoustic Tuesday 214

Streaming music has a lot of benefits. But it can also have some downsides. In this video, I explain the five main disadvantages to streaming music and show you how to avoid them. Music streaming, whether it's through Spotify or Youtube, has to be one of the greatest expansions in music consumption. For a few bucks a month, you have access to millions of songs. You have seemingly infinite choices. But there are plenty of negatives to this easy consumption of music. Do you remember the days where you had to go to a music store, search for an album, purchase the album, and invest time into making that album worth it? With streaming, you lose all of the process and ritual that made the discovery of new music magical. We've lost the cultural touchstone of sharing music through word of mouth recommendations. Instead, we're fed recommendations by an algorithm — which is incredibly helpful at times, but lacks a human touch. There are plenty of reasons to like streaming music, but there is a dark side to all the convenience that streaming music provides. This episodes seeks to address some of those issues. In addition to talking about the dark side of music streaming, you'll get a big update from Heartbreaker Guitars on everything from new models to supply chain explanations.
