Dr. Michael Mendez, Assistant Professor of Environmental Planning and Policy at the University of California, Irvine,talks about the inequities that took place during the 2017 Thomas Fire in Ventura County, California, where recovery resources were primarily directed toward wealthier residents ignoring the needs of undocumented and indigenous workers. He discusses "slow violence," the ongoing exposures and vulnerabilities of Latinx communities, to human-caused environmental degradation or climate change. Dr. Mendez is the author of the award-winning book, "Climate Change from the Streets: How Conflict and Collaboration Strengthen the Environmental Justice Movment."
