Hannah Frances Interview
Hannah Frances is a composer, vocalist and guitarist, whose second album was one that has literally been spinning on repeat in our car. Spanning progressive rock, avant-folk, and jazz, the record navigates the ongoing, non-linear work of healing, with arrangements featuring contributions from Daniel Rossen of Grizzly Bear. Weajue spoke with Hannah at the tail end of her six-show tour, in Toronto at the Baby G. In this episode, we play the album in full and talk about uncovering what needed to be felt. Also airing in the second half of the program: Humanhood by the Weather Station, her seventh studio album, released January 2025 on Fat Possum. Hosted on Acast. Quickly Quickly Interview
Graham Johnson has been making music as Quickly Quickly since before most people had the language for what he was doing. When we first encountered his music, I couldn’t describe to to anyone either. This conversation catches him in reflection of figuring out what comes next. I Heard That Noise is his most distilled record yet, with beats infused acoustic songs carrying production jump scares, built almost entirely in a windowless basement with red carpet and a knockdown ceiling he eventually put his fist through. We talked about the noise you surround yourself with so you don't have to be alone with your thoughts. About spending three years and one new laptop on a single song. About what it means to finish something that started as a different version of you, and learning to let it go.Transcript available here: https://deeandjue.me/2026/03/09/quickly-quickly-interview/ Hosted on Acast. Goodbye mewithoutyou (w/ Mike Almquist)
This week on Absent Sounds, we share a conversation with Mike Almquist: longtime manager, creative partner, and quiet architect behind the world of mewithoutYou. If you've ever let us play you music, you know we have mewithoutYou on almost every playlist. Saying "goodbye" (in the fullness of whatever the word really means) is nearly impossible. In this episode, we talk about how the band became a philosophy, and how something can end… without ever really ending. From early days of discovering A→B Life to [Untitled], Mike walks us through the life of mewithoutYou. At its core, this episode means a lot to us, and is one that we've held for a long time. We're so grateful he joined us, and that you care enough to keep listening. The transcript for the episode can be found here. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

John Van Deusen Interview (2026)
It's been four years since our first conversation with John, and this time we catch him in person during his stop in Madison Heights, MI for his Midwest tour supporting his new record.A lot has changed in four years, but the comfort his music brings his listeners has not. Unlike his other records, Joyful Noise is his most explicitly worship-focused project—yet it was the one that almost killed him to make.We talked about creative exhaustion and surrender. About the "embarrassment" of being a Christian artist. About bringing your anger and sorrow to God and a suffering savior who knows. It's a deeply honest and deeply human conversation and we're really thankful we got the chance to chat again because he is someone we look up to :) Hosted on Acast. Snowing Interview
It's officially December, which means its officially snowing season. So what better way to welcome in the cold than an interview with cult classic band, Snowing. We sat down with Willow Brazuk and JR back when the sun was still around at New Friends Fest in Toronto—their first time ever playing in Canada. Also joined by our friends Paul and Zac from Farron Keep, we talked about the wonder that was their debut/last record: I Could Do Whatever I Wanted If I Wanted. The episode closes with music from Farron Keep's "The Weight of Rain" so tune in to hear it live on CJAM 99.1 FM Windsor-DetroitTranscript available here: deeandjue.me/absent-sounds Hosted on Acast. Soft Blue Shimmer Interview
Char and Meredith of Soft Blue Shimmer, along with producer Corey Coffman, join Weajue for a conversation about "They Will Leave Us With Nothing." It’s a record about capitalism, bodily grief, and what we pass between us when the system leaves us with nothing. This three-sided emotional triangle made it one of the hardest albums Corey has ever produced, and make it all the more resonant for us today. Recorded at Taylor Creek Park in Toronto (my favourite :) Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Alexei Shishkin Interview
Alexei Shishkin makes music the same way he watches soccer: with an appreciation for improvisation. It's not often we're able to pay attention to the small moment that open into something larger but his record is all about the art of not overcomplicating it. On this episode of Absent Sounds, we have a good time playing through his debut Good Times and talk about how the album came together across a few days in Providence with producer Bradford Krieger. With a random word generator in hand, they quickly crafted a record that has squeezed much creative juice into our hearts. We also talk about his Treefort documentary, Carl Dennis, Microdisney, Pavement, and the difference between art and craft (I'm still figuring out that last piece). You can find an abridged transcript here. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Allegra Krieger Interview
Allegra Krieger joins Weajue for a conversation about her album Art of the Unseen Infinity Machine—a record that grapples with impermanence, and the liminal spaces of existence. We talk about the Infinity Machine as a mechanism moving through us, signs, talismans and dream. She explains the strange trinity of pain and joy and compromise, the act of absolving yourself and your body, the binary of here or not-here, and what it means to sit with the pull toward "over and out" when nothing is yours to keep. Recorded outside the Opera House in Toronto on the final night of her tour with Foxwarren. We end off the episode playing tracks from Foxwarren's latest record, 2. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

John Roseboro Interview
On this episode of Absent Sounds, Weajue caught John Roseboro to talk through his album Fools — each track feels like a meditation on love, faith, and the strange arithmetic of becoming. Together, this quiet, searching conversation with John helps frame the album as a doorway into memory. We drift throug what does it mean to be known? To surrender? To make art that is an offering. To see more episodes, you can listen live on cjam.ca or find the archives at deeandjue.me/absent-sounds Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Bloom Effect Interview
These days my brain feels like it’s tied up in a billion threads, but music has a way of loosening the knots. Bloom Effect’s oscilón has been part of that unwinding: a record that carries you out of the tangled noise and into something expansive, cosmic, and bright. The embodiment of love even. I caught up with the band (Jula Lafit, Craig Weighman, and Tom Rappa) at Sneaky Dee;s before they took to the stage.Bloom Effect is currently based in Vancouver, but are touring through the East with dates including:Guelph, Canada - Sep 30, 2025Montreal, Canada -Oct 2, 2025Ottawa, Canada -Oct 3, 2025Oct 4, 2025 - London, CanadaIf you're around and looking for the best wall of sound, you'll be sure to find it within those nights. The Holy Gasp Interview
In this episode of Absent Sounds, we head to Kensington Market (Toronto) to rediscover the 2018 record The Love Songs of Oedipus Rex by The Holy Gasp along with the re-release of the documentary that captured its creation. The Holy Gasp is the songwriting and performance project of Benjamin Hackman, who wrote the thirteen track beauty of theatrical, and devastating yet and often darkly funny storytelling. Luke Sargent is a Toronto-based filmmaker, editor, and director whose work both merges with the record through the documentary of the same name. Together, we trace how the record grew out of grief, divorce, therapy, and community, and how Luke’s camera transformed 85 hours of raw footage into a 22-minute film that balances those themes with care. We talk about the intimacy of recording on Toronto Island, the vulnerability of love, and what it means to parent yourself through endings. The conversation is woven through our playthrough of The Love Songs of Oedipus Rex, so tune in to listen to both!Find the can watch the documentary The Love Songs of Oedipus Rex now: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hJ40LgOI6eY Hosted on Acast. Swimming Interview
Howdy friends! Today’s episode is the second installment of our New Friends Fest 2025 coverage, featuring an interview with Newfoundland-based band Swimming. From late-night basement hours to three-day marathons of writing and recording, Swimming’s music is built on both discipline and openness.Earlier this year, Weajue sat down with Jacob Cherwick to talk about the process of shaping Old (their sophomore record released in February) from long jam sessions into songs that balance mathy intricacy with emotional weight. Tune in on Absent Sounds for our full NFF 2025 interview with Swimming, plus a playthrough of Old. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Gingerbee Interview
From August 1–3, New Friends Fest took over Toronto's west end. The annual DIY punk, emo, and hardcore gathering brings bands from across the world together for three days of loud, unfiltered communion. Today's episode is the first of our 2025 NFF festival coverage. The "coolest internet emo band" logged off and touched grass (literally, on the lawn of the Lithuanian House), where we caught up with them after their set. We talked about the vulnerability in their lyrics, the massive 20-piece sound they conjure in the studio versus the rawness of their live shows, and what it feels like to be part of a festival built on care, catharsis, and shared love of the underground. As we play the interview, we also dive into their latest EP Apiary from top to bottom. If you haven't heard it yet, it’s 22 minutes of pure emo bliss in its sweetest, most emotionally potent form. Gingerbee is a band impossible to ignore. To close out the show, we run through Arm's Length's newest record, There’s a Whole World Out There. Listen today at 1pm EST Hosted on Acast. Avery Friedman Interview
On this episode, Weajue is joined by singer-songwriter Avery Friedman to walk through the tender terrain of her debut album, New Thing. What began as a private act of survival- writing songs alone in her room, quickly transformed into a full-bodied practice of vulnerability, expression, and queer joy.We go track by track, unpacking the emotions and stories behind each song: from the aching stillness and reverb of “Biking Standing” to the flirty pop chaos of “Photo Booth.” Along the way, Avery opens up about what it means to try something new in adulthood, to face fear head-on, and to let your awkwardness guide you. Tune in to hear what this album has in store. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Tomato Flower Interview
In this episode, Weadee sits down with Tomato Flower to talk about the everchanging architecture of their songwriting — from the politics of form, to learning which walls to break down. We trace the emotional undercurrents of songs like Radical, and Destroyer, and reflect on the tensions between brevity and maximalism. Along the way: we play their 2024 record No from top to bottom.Tomato Flower is a four-piece experimental rock band based in Baltimore, Maryland, whose music find a way to blend fractured rhythms and strong melodic instincts. No as an album sees Tomato Flower walking a tightrope of sound between chaos and clarity. Thank you to the band for joining us! Be sure to catch them live when you can :) Hosted on Acast. Conjure Hand Interview
In this episode of Absent Sounds, Weadee chats with Conjure Hand, the Victoria-based band behind the captivating album Spellbound Blues. When it comes to pushing the boundaries of rock and blues, Conjure Hand is a name that stands out. With powerful chords and a studio sound that's just as raw and electrifying as their live performances, they’re redefining the genre one track at a time. Motherhood Interview
Hola everyone! Looks who's back with another interview :) This time, I had the privilege of sitting down with the endlessly inventive, boundary-pushing band, Motherhood.Over the years, their sonic world has been no secret to music lovers across the country—one filled with sharp turns, playful chaos, and a deep sense of purpose. Their latest record, Thunder Perfect Mind, is no exception, moving through themes of surrender, propulsion, and the forces beyond our control. I caught up with them before their set @tavernetour which was packedddd to the brim. If theyre ever touring within a 5hour radius of your city, GO SEE THEM LIVE!! I promise you wont wanna miss it. Sunforger Interview
Welcome back friends and foes! In today's episode, we get to talk to the dynamic and ever-evolving band, Sunforger. This group, consisting of Kier, Piper, Chris, and Spencer have secretly been living in my ears for the better part of 5 years noodling around in post-grunge/post-whatever sounds. Track after track, the band's knack for balancing songwriting with tenacity shines through, making their last record, Sunforger, all the better. We go through each of the tracks together, and get a glimpse into the world of Sunforger for a bit, straight from the heart of Montreal. Jordan Klassen Interview
Today, we're exploring the work of Jordan Klassen, the Vancouver-based singer-songwriter and producer whose poetic "fairy folk" has been captivating listeners for well over a decade. Jordan’s latest project, Marginalia (2023), is a deeply introspective and elegant complement to its predecessor, Glossolalia. These two albums, born from the same creative period, reflect two sides of a coin: the stripped-down vulnerability of one and the fuller, more textured exploration of the other. In this episode, we’ll go through some of the margins of the album, discovering the metaphors, and themes that shape Marginalia while playing through the album from top to bottom. Tanukichan Interview
Welcome back, friends! Today's episode is featuring the fuzz/shoegaze rocker Tanukichan, the moniker of artist Hannah Von Loon. Her latest EP, "Circles," released on September 20th, 2024, beautifully weaves themes of personal growth and cyclical patterns in life.In our conversation, Hannah talks about collaborating with a new producer, Franco Reid, which opened her up to new creative possibilities and personal connections.Coming off a whirlwind tour cycle (I was fortunate enough to see her live in Detroit with Alex G, and Alvvays), and another incredible record released just in 2023, "Circles" feels like much needed space to unwind. It's a reflection of her growth, connections, and the cyclical nature of life. When you listen close, you realize that music continues to offer a home for challenging her once closely held beliefs.Dive into this new chapter with us at 1pm EST on CJAM 99.1FM, and join us as we explore the sounds of Tanukichan’s latest work. Tall Heights Interview
EIn this episode of Absent Sounds, Weadee chats with Paul Wright of Tall Heights as we play through their 2024 release, Softly Softly. This album beautifully captures the quiet beauty of autumn, and though it feels like winter here, we’re still in fall—there's nearly a month left of the season! Certain albums become go-to choices as the weather changes, and Softly Softly is one we’ll return to every fall. To wrap up the show, we play elle veille encore by Montreal-based band Rosier. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Algernon Cadwallader Interview
EOn today's episode of We Built This House, we take a deep dive into the legacy of Algernon Cadwallader—a band that didn’t just play music but helped build the foundation of the emo revival. Together, Peter Helmis, Joe Reinhart, Colin Mahony and Nick Tazza all join us starting from their roots as Halfway to Holland, tracing their journey through DIY basement shows, relentless touring, and a punk ethos that defined their sound. We attempt to walk through every room of their brief yet important discography- from the raw foundation of their debut Some Kind of Cadwallader to the complex renovation of Parrot Flies and beyond. There's a sort of Sisyphus-like struggle that comes with creating something meaningful from scratch, and if anyone in the revival knew how to do it, Algernon sure did. Without a doubt, the landscape of what we call emo today reaches back to their influence, and it's all the better because of it. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

From Indian Lakes Interview
Since 2009, From Indian Lakes has been weaving a unique blend of emo, dreamo/whatever-mo, and post-hardcore, that's pulled listeners into the moody depths of Indian Lakes, California. So much so, that we even named our radio show after one of their albums. In this first episode of We Built This House- a new mini-series on Absent Sounds we're joined by Joey Vannucchi where we dive into the inspirations, evolution, and ethos behind FIL. Together we're going floor by floor, deep diving into the discography and head-to-toe Frankensteining the body of the band's work.In many ways, this episode feels like an origin story- not only for the band, but for ourselves as well. November marks 5 years since we've started this little side project called Absent Sounds and we're filled with gratitude. What a milestone :) Thank you to the old friends that have listened over the years, and the new ones we've made along the way. May you be well, may you be at peace, and may all your favourite bands stay together. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Las Nubes Interview
In this episode, we sit down with Ale Campos and Emile Milgrim of Las Nubes, the Miami-based rock outfit known for bringing together gritty, 90s-inspired punk and dreamy pop vibes. Las Nubes (Spanish for "The Clouds") takes its name and style from the volatile Miami weather—one moment, sunny skies, the next, torrential rain. Now, with their latest album, Tormentas Malsanas (Unhealthy Storms), Las Nubes takes us on a journey through life’s unpredictable changes. In our interview, Ale and Emile share insights on the making of Tormentas Malsanas, what it’s like balancing personal struggles with creative output, and how they stay inspired while working through life’s most intense moments. We also dive into their creative process, and what it means to be artists in a world that never stops throwing challenges their way. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Half Waif Interview
In this episode of Absent Sounds, we sit down with Upstate NY-based artist, Half Waif— the project of the multi-talented Nandi Rose. On October 4th, she released her sixth full-length album, See You at the Maypole, which breathes through the impermanence of life. The first time I played the album from top to bottom, I broke down in tears. There is so much strength that can be felt in this record. Throughout the interview, Nandi Rose reflects on creating an album that serves as an archive of one of the heaviest periods in her life. As she shares insights on the importance of collective grief and healing, the album also deeply resonates with the natural world that surrounded her during its creation. We’re so grateful to Nandi for joining us in this conversation, and we hope it meets you when you need it most. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

M. Vaughan Interview
In this episode, we sit down with M. Vaughan to explore the personal and creative journey behind his latest EP, Keep in Touch. Its a catchy blend of synth/electronic dance music with a touch of singer songwriter work. Having moved to Berlin during the pandemic, Vaughan found himself at a turning point, stepping away from his dream in the dance music scene. His relocation led to a deep reflection on what it means to follow your passion, and how that can take unexpected forms. During our conversation, we explore how his transition from the US to Berlin to Lisbon marked a new chapter in his life—both personally and musically. He discusses his evolving sound, fusing elements of electronic production with songwriting, and how his unique approach to resampling and synthesizers helps him blur genre lines. This interview also delves into what it looks like to pursue what you truly love, even when it requires leaving behind familiar paths. M. Vaughan is an artist navigating the complexities of identity, place, and passion, all while embracing the evolution of his sound. It's why Keep in Touch is so beautifully crafted. Route 500 Interview
On today's episode of Absent Sounds, Derek Inver of Route 500 reflects on the paths that led to his 2024 debut record, Island Perimeter and creating music in the midst of his own dark nights. Route 500 is a slowcore project from the UK and this album has already become one of our most played of the year. Throughout this thoughtful interview he breaks down his songs and chats about ways life continues to bring moments of hope. His haunting music speaks to the weary and worn and the ones searching for light in the shadows. We hope his music nestles into your heart the way it did ours! Hosted on Acast. Bobbing Interview
Welcome back friends! It's been a hot minute and a slightly rough summer; nevertheless we're still alive and have a host of great interviews lined up for the rest of the year! Kicking us back into gear, we sit down with Bobbing (aka Bob aka Robert Ross). He's a Bay area artist whose sound drifts through genres like indie, electronica, experimental and mathy rock. Personally speaking, I'd say his music lives in the same mental space as my collection of cool rocks, sticks and shells. Its eclectic and fun! His record Year of the Newt (2023) carries all that energy and more- its an idiosyncratic measure of faith in his ability to cook up the coolest sounds and tie them down for easy listening. In this episode, we dive into Year of the Newt, explore the inspiration behind the tracks, and jump back in time to the Feed Me Jack days (another incredible music project he started with his college friends). Whether you’re a fan of crunchy soundscapes or love unpredictable twists, Bobbing’s music offers something fresh and exciting. Catch the episodes live on cjam.ca/99.1 FM or through our archives :) Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Brutus VIII Interview
Brutus VIII has never been one to hide away from the dark side. His latest record- Pure Glottny, turns full face towards the corners of love most people would hate to find within themselves. In many ways, it feels like a concept album within the mind of an incel. Yet with each track, and the further we dove within the interview, the more it became clear that Brutus VIII isn't just exploring these shadowy emotions but challenging them. The songs on Pure Glottny aren’t just raw—they're confrontational, urging listeners to confront their own hidden desires and discomforts. Our conversation unraveled the complexity behind each track, revealing a vulnerability that lies beneath the aggressive exterior. It’s an album that doesn’t shy away from the uncomfortable truths about human nature, and our interview reflects that unflinching honesty. Hosted on Acast. Diving into the King of Misery by Daudi Matsiko
We've got @daudi 's prolific song writing featured in his 2024 record King of Misery. The beloved @nateblackton joined me on Absent Sounds while Weadee took a nap and we dove into the album, from top to bottom, track by track. You can catch the episode on @friendsofcjam today @ 1pm EST.I also wanted to give more context on a song I wasnt sure about during the recording of the episode, and the video used here-"Derby’s Dose is a song that means a lot to me. It’s a personal response to a tragic and horrific moment in our collective history. Derby was an enslaved man, tortured and murdered by Thomas Thistlewood. A Lincolnshire man. Derby’s story broke my heart. What is more, is that Derby had skin, a body and desires like my own. Like all of us, a desire for shelter, food and safety. Yet he was greeted with torture, dehumanisation and ultimately annihilation. The legacy of that human loss lives on today, unresolved. This song was created lovingly with that in mind. My sister, Judith Matsiko, joined me on vocals for this song. It was really special to have her voice on the recording with me and added to the personal nature of the process. Making a difficult and heavy song, less lonely and more beautiful." Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Racing Mountain Pleasant Interview
November 11th marks the 1 year anniversary of Racing Mountain Pleasant's debut album 'Grip Your Fist, I'm Heaven Bound.' Previously known as Kingfisher, this Michigan based band (Ann Arbor/Detroit) put one of our favourite albums out last year and what's more, to celebrate the album's birthday, Weajue and I were joined by Sam and Casey to do an album playthrough. The talk was so much fun and I laughed half the time just editing so you'll definitely enjoying taking a listen :) Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Lutalo Interview
Lutalo Jones is a songwriter and multi-instrumentalist for the ages, so when Weadee and I received the opportunity to talk after their show opening for Claud, we were more than excited. There is a certain essence that clearly runs through the music of Lutalo. Beyond the tangy guitar and the fuzzy distortions, they present a genuine heart to everything they touch.
