Jim and A.Ron survey the horrors of war that is episode 609 of HBO’s Game of Thrones, “Battle of the Bastards”, and proclaim it brutal, ultimately satisfying, if a tad predictable. There were no real surprises to be found tonight if you’ve been paying attention the past few weeks, but it’s still nice to see the end of some truly nasty regimes tonight, even if the casualties were high in both the statistical and personal sense. At this stage each loss of life is going to hurt in the war to come, that still awaits north of the wall. And we still don’t know the true cost of the hasty alliances made with the Greyjoys and Littlefinger’s Arryn forces. And will Sansa’s talk of “no one” be prophetic? Jim and A.Ron, after careful sober analysis, declare “Book of the Stranger” an awesome episode of HBO’s Game of Thornes. In an impressive display of girl power, Sansa and Jon team up to take back the North, Cersie and the Queen of Thorns conspire to take back King’s Landing, Yara helps her brother find his spine, Dany flips braziers and sets fire to many a Khal’s ambition, and Osha… well, Osha finds that there are still limits to what a gal can get away with in Westeros, but we’re mostly okay with that because it seems like Ramsey already has a noose around his neck and doesn’t even know it. And that’s not even the half of it. Pink letters, Tormund and Brienne shipping, Littlefinger scheming, and much more coming straight up. Don’t forget, we’re not done! After seeing episode 604 of HBO’s Game of Thrones, “Book of the Stranger”, Jim wants to shout from the rooftops “TARGARYENS ARE FIREPROOF!!” I desperately want to argue with him, but he’s right. About this particular Targaryen in this TV show version of Westeros, anyway, and it was admittedly cool. Me, I liked the emotional heft and tingles from the Sansa and Jon reunion, the Theon and Yara/Asha reunion, I even enjoyed the Littlefinger / Robin reunion was fairly awesome. Very interesting to see what people ultimately think of this episodes, especially book fans… has Martin been lying to us this whole time, or are the Double Ds making some smart and cinema friendly edits? Episode 602 of HBO’s Game of Thrones, “Home”, is just a stellar hour of television. For once, it seems like everyone is on (or off?) the same page, with delights for show watchers and book readers of every stripe. Tyrion’s risky gamble, the Bolton empire rapidly crumbling, giants of all shapes and sizes smashing all the heads, there is a lot to take in and discuss and we try our level best to talk about it all, with the help of a Wun Wun sized mail bag. Jaw dropping, shocking, and inspirational, there is just so much to unpack that it’s almost unfair that we have to give our instant reactions, but that’s what we’re here for! The first episode of season six of HBO’s “Game of Thrones”, entitled “The Red Woman”, seems to be a real controversy with the fans. Disappearing dogs, dead-end Dorne, and shifty Sand Snakes, among other things, caused the flipping of thousands of tables across the globe. What did we think? Brace yourself, contrarian opinion is coming; we’re mostly okay with how things went down. Who has time to worry about dogs when Brienne is pledging half of Ned Starks sword to his daughter Sansa’s service? Or Ghost is howling at Castle Black? Or while we’re witnessing the craziest disrobing scene in GoT history? This is a super-sized episode one extravaganza, loaded with observations about the human condition, life, death, love, and, uh, dragon poop. And you know our mailbag was full to bursting, so find out what your fellow fans have to say. Of course, we’re not finished this week, not by a long shot. A few days of reflection and a few more rewatches have not been any kinder to our memories of episode 509, entitled “The Dance of Dragons”… Support Bald Move: Amazon | Club Bald Move A few days of reflection and a few more rewatches have not been any kinder to our memories of episode 509, entitled “The Dance of Dragons”… Arya’s subplot was uncharacteristically flat and obvious, Stannis is no longer the Mannis, things in Meereen were thrilling and epic but suffered from a bit of execution (too soon?) problems, and Dorne… well, it’s Dorne, which is an old Valyrian word for “crap”. Hopefully next week we’ll get a ray of sunshine as we finish of the series. Perhaps somebody will order a Code Red on Ramsay and his A Few Good Men? Or maybe Dany and Drogon will ride back in town, free the other two dragons, and Tyrion and a suddenly awesome Daario can take the skies together in a magical hour of fun and friendship! Either that, or characters we know and love will be brutalized before our eyes as we take emotional kick after emotional kick straight to the emotional crotch. Please sirs, can we have another?!
