Ep 218A Year Since Anna Lost Gremlin
In loving memory of Gremlin, who Anna lost a year ago, we replay one of our favourite shows: Anna's chat with Dr Zazie Todd - CompanionAnimal Psychology - talking about her book Purr. In our conversation on cats , the lack of science on their behaviour (compared to dogs), she recount several hilarious anecdotes on Gremlin, which will make you realise why she named him Gremlin, the lengths he went for to help Molly when she was poorly, and why Gremlin was quite a cat for someone’s first feline! He is so missed, but we hope is he is reunited with Molly across that rainbow bridge. Ep 216Dogs Die In Hot Cars
We’re joined by Anna Ewers-Clark, lead Vet at The Blue Cross, chatting about the dangers of the hot weather. Every season has its pros and cons for dogs, and in Summer the extra daylight hours give us more time to walk your dog, but it's also a time when a walk in the park can turn into a vet emergency. We discuss why dogs overheat so easily, and what signs owners should be aware of to spot in time to prevent an urgent trip to the vets. We discuss why young and older dogs are more susceptible. Why the flat faced breeds find the heat very difficult, and why darker coated dogs absorb the rays faster than paler coated dogs. And all the tips to keep your home and garden cool and the fun games to play indoors and out when it's hot. Not forgetting how to ensure smooth, cool travel for dogs in the car, and why you should never leave a dog in a stationary vehicle even in the shade on a hot day. Ep 215The Wonders of Bone Broth
We’re joined by Rachel Down of Boil & Broth talking about how her journey discovering the huge health benefits of Bone Broth. Following a dead end road on courses of antibiotics, which seemed to make her worse, it was discovering the power of nutrition, especially bone broth that led to her transformation to being slimline, and in full vibrant health. By researching how between 70-80 per cent of immune system resides in our gut lining, suddenly Rachel had the ‘eureka’ moment. Wanting to spread the word on the nutritional values of bone broth to help restore the microbiome that can become damaged by an onslaught of medication, vaccinations, poor diet, and a host of other environmental factors, Rachel launched a company dedicated to delivering bone broth to your door. Beginning with traditional liquid broth, before logistics including transport, freezer space gave her the idea of de-hydrate it. Offering a super concentrated, untainted ‘de-hydrated’ bone broth that could be posted through a letterbox, and stored with minimal cupboard space that was simple to re-hydrate, it wasn’t long before dog (and cat) owning customers were asking if they could have some for their pets. Anna is a HUGE fan of bone broth understanding its health benefits to dogs, but she knows what a long process it is to make from scratch and with Rachel’s research to prove that the nutritional values of her de-hydrated broth remains the same as a a liquid broth, she's begun taking it herself! We chat about these benefits from being great for preventative care of joints, its packed with the structural protein collagen, glucosamine and chondroitin and as an isotonic drink being full of minerals including magnesium, and sodium so that Bone Broth enables faster hydration at a cellular level than water alone. Announcing the Biome Broth Study asking: ‘Could adding Bone Broth help my dog’s gut microbiome’? Boil & Broth has teamed up with Anna Webb and Microbiologist and Microbiome researcher, Dr Carol Hughes, at the Biome4Pets company, a huge fan of bone broth herself as a way to enhance the microbiome’s bacteria diversity. The Biome Broth study is open to all dogs, (who have never taken bone broth before) to take part in a research project to discover how the diversity of the biome -particularly with both the Bifidobacteria and Verrucomicrobia bacteria (both very valuable strains) are known to be enhanced by bone broth. To get involved follow the links below, its represents a chance to have your dog’s biome tested before and after four weeks adding bone broth to your dog’s diet. It's also chance to receive a discounted wellness package from Anna and much more! There’s also a special discount on Boil & Broth for all listeners - using the code AnnaWebb15 Click here to take part in the study and follow on Instagram.Biome4PetsFor more about Anna go to annawebb.co.ukMusic and production by Mike Hanson for Pod People ProductionsCover art by JaijoCover photo by Rhian Ap Gruffydd at Gruff PawtraitsAdvertising and sponsorship opportunities [email protected]
Ep 214Paul Drayton
We’re joined by Actor, Author and Animal lover, Paul Drayton, talking about his love of dogs that was inspired by a Westie as a child. Drawn to animals he has owned horses, cows and even peacocks on his farm. We chat about his passion for Irish Setters and why they will always be apart of his heart. We talk about rescuing as being morally mandatory, and why Paul is a firm believer of spaying and neutering to minimise the dog population. We chat about the responsibility dogs really are, and the sad fact that rescues are now brimful down to the pandemic boom. Paul chats about his farm animals too and why he’s passionate about his pygmy goats. We touch on why dogs impact on our lives and the devastation in knowing that dogs just don’t live long enough. Happily divorced Paul stresses how life is about chapters and moving forwards, which with his pack of dogs by his side he’s in a good place to write his book which will explain about how a sweet boy from Sunderland turned into a former alcoholic.Follow on Instagram If you love A Dog's Life and would like to help support the show why not become a Patreon backer where you can also have access to some exclusive content. Ep 213Roolo - The Enrichment Revolution
When In a bid to find the perfect enrichment toy for their own dogs, the team @Play9 invented their own! I’m chatting to Lee Bridges and John Allard about the Enrichment Revolution, and particularly on interactive toys as a major part of this enrichment awareness.Inspired by a pencil eraser in the design phases to create the Roolo that’s very clever its ‘a shape of constant width’, which is naturally occurring, but very rare! This shape and its tactile material that’s 100% eco only takes the smallest movement from the dog, and the Roolo gets working, revolving and spinning to release the tasty treats. Providing a toy to occupy your pooch, break up the day, bust any boredom, and use for their mental and physical dexterity. It can also be used as a slow feeder with its 100% eco material that sets it apart as both ethical and non -toxic. We chat about why its good for shapes and sizes cleverly allowing a great interactive experience Designed for modern life, and optimising indoor training opportunities, and fun, its size means it's too big to roll under most sofas! Enrichment is key to dog's emotional wellness, especially in helping to combat brain fog, and the onset of ‘doggy dementia’. Tried and tested by both Mr Binks and Prudence, the Roolo gets the Paws up!!! Ep 212Barry Stebbing
We’re joined by Artist and Author, Barry Stebbing, who is talking about his first novel, Cedric - Footprints in the Sand. Based on a true story and inspired by Sir Edwin Landseer’s iconic paining of a black and white Newfoundland dog housed in the Tate in London, Barry brings the unknown back story of a Newfoundland named Bob - renamed as Cedric in this captivating book, which fuses fact and fiction to bring the painting to life. Capturing the life in the Victorian era as so different from ours, yet with similarities highlighting the human condition, with the constant of dogs as featuring in our lives as man’s best friend. Cedric - Footprints in the Sand is a tribute to a very brave dog that saved 23 people from drowning in an age when traveling by sea inevitably caused ship wrecks and huge loss of life. Barry lets his imagination flow with fictitious almost Dickensian characters that become real, with their lives shaped by this unsung hero, Cedric and his immense bravery until the very end.Buy the book here and for more information go to Barry's website or follow on InstagramIf you love A Dog's Life and would like to help support the show why not become a Patreon backer where you can also have access to some exclusive content. Ep 211Dr Dan O'Neill
We’re joined by Dr Dan O’Neill, Associate Professor for Companion Animal Epidemiology at the RVC and co-founding ICECDogs member. We’re chatting about the ICECDogs - the International Collaborative on Extreme Conformations in Dogs. Particularly discussing the recently published position paper, the aim of which is to help owners to recognise good innate health in dogs. The paper was heavily informed by research from the Royal Veterinary College (RVC). The first of its kind, it provides a guide for animal caregivers, and the wider public, to identify healthy natural physical characteristics in dogs and to predict and assess potential health and welfare based on body shape. This will help anyone who cares about dogs to understand how likely a dog is to suffer from negative impacts resulting from an extreme conformation. Dr Dan explains that no dog owner ever wants an unhealthy dog, but the huge popularity of dogs with extreme conformations suggests that many owners have not fully grasped the link between body shape and quality of life for dogs. The aim to raise awareness at all levels - owners, prospective owners, breeders, and underline that dogs should be dogs, and not click bait on social media.Find out more :The full ICECDogs paper, can be accessed hereMore information about the UK’s Brachycephalic Working Group, can be found hereMore information about the RVC’s VetCompass research, can be found hereAnd on InstagramIf you love A Dog's Life and would like to help support the show why not become a Patreon backer where you can also have access to some exclusive content. We’re also chatting about the new Vaccination guidelines just announced by the WSAVA (World Small Animal Veterinary Association). As a step forward in further highlighting the role of Titre Tests as a tool to manage your dog’s immunity, rather than simply over vaccinating. And deciding when is the right time to give puppy shots for a lifetime of immunity. Ep 204Carol Hughes Pt 2
Carol Hughes is back for the second a mini-series on the Microbiome. Carol’s journey began being commissioned by the Welsh Government to research plant compounds, in particular natural occurring steroids. Carol explains how this naturally moved into researching animals microbiomes as part of her parent company Phytorigins. It was this research that brought Carol into focusing on the Microbiome. With technology advancing particularly with Artificial Intelligence. We discuss how working with leaders in the field at Aberystwyth University, how her team has conducted the first in-depth observation of different ‘biomes: cats, horses, and of course, dogs. We talk about her first study relating to obesity in dogs, and the bacteria - in fact a natural plant steroid that stimulates a pathway to the brain that could help reducing a tendency for obesity. Highlighting that you are what you eat, we explore how the microbiome responds to different hormones, and the lack of them, and the fact that it's a very delicate eco-system that relies on so many factors. Carol believes the microbiome shows everything in your dog, when you know how to read the picture presented. What she has discovered is that dogs in the UK are not well, and that their’ biomes are more compromised that cats and horses. Her research can highlight why spaying and neutering can affect the biome, and how antibiotic resistance is very obvious, along with other bacteria that are missing, painting a sad picture. For more information visit their website or FacebookIf you love A Dog's Life and would like to help support the show why not become a Patreon backer where you can also have access to some exclusive content. Ep 203Carol Hughes Pt 1
We’re joined by Carol Hughes talking in the first of mini series on the Microbiome. Carol’s journey began being commissioned by the Welsh Government to research plant compounds in particular natural occurring steroids. Carol explains how this naturally moved into researching animals microbiomes as part of her parent company Phytorigins. We discuss how science namely Artificial Intelligence has moved forwards combined with working with leaders in the field at Aberystwyth University, how her team has conducted the first in-depth observation of different ‘biomes: cats, horses and of course dogs. We talk about her first study relating to obesity in dogs, and the bacteria that indicate and prove why dogs are getting porkier. You are what you eat!!!!! Carol believes the microbiome shows everything in your dog, when you know how to read the picture presented. What she has discovered is that dogs in the UK are not well. In fact they are less healthy than horses and cats. We discuss the many reasons as to why this is the case, revealing that Carol’s research is a honey pot of information that could help Britain’s dogs be healthier. Studies concur that this ‘first milk’ delivers vital nutrients and antibodies. By supplementing with this natural powerhouse is shown to balance and help fight disease and the ageing process. As a natural resource to balance the immune system, colostrum is also known to alleviate persistent skin conditions, increase mobility, stimulate cognitive function and boost gut health. Having seen the benefits of colostrum on her own dogs and cats for over a decade, Anna is thrilled to now be able to source this potent ’superfood’ in the UK, which previously she purchased from Switzerland. Ep 199Esther Logue of Paleo Ridge Pt 1
Esther Logue of Paleoridge, is back talking about the re-package launch of the Paleo Plus in part one of this 'You Are What You Eat' special to kick off a series of shows devoted to nutrition. The new packaging has been created to convey the plus in Paleo Ridge, and goes live tomorrow! We chat about why Paleo Plus could be described as peace of mind in a bowl. Packed with different cuts and organs of whole ethical sourced meats and fish, the range mirrors the 80:10:10 ancestral diet formula. But just as wolves might dig up some roots, nibble berries and herbs, our domesticated dogs like to chew on fresh juicy grass, even chomp off a blackberry! That’s why Paleo Plus taps into the need for the right quantity of extra superfoods to be added - putting the plus into the range. Using the company’s blend of ‘Berry Good’, with ingredients chosen for nutritional excellence, including: Green Lipped Mussel, Blackberries, Kale, Seaweed, and Hemp seed. We discuss anew field in nutrition which draws from the ancient studies of Hippocrates, which is treating like with like. Studies have recently shown an improvement in dogs with kidney disease by feeding them additional kidneys. This is known as ‘organ therapy’. Setting the Paleo Plus range apart if its use of every organ (in the right quantity) allowing for maximum nutritional potential. Every organ, be it the lung or the spleen, is packed with a different nutritional profile, enhancing the spectrum of health benefits of the range. Ep 195Aurélie Four
This week we’re delighted to chat to Photographer, Aurélie Four. Originally from France, Aurélie is a London based wedding and lifestyle photographer for people who love dogs. Her relaxed, candid approach made for great conversation on her extensive knowledge and love of dogs, Welsh corgis especially: letting “dogs be dogs” and their well behaved humans be themselves in the love, life and work moments she captures. Her own pup, Marcel, whose social media (@lecorgi) she runs, inspired her to live more in the moment and make memories. Their travels together and considering dogs to be very important family members made Aurélie want to champion businesses that welcome them and to support charities helping those in need. Together they volunteer to cheer elderly patients and staff at a local NHS hospital.Check out her website and InstagramIf you love A Dog's Life and would like to help support the show why not become a Patreon backer where you can also have access to some exclusive content. Ep 194140 Years of Battersea Cats
We start 2024 chatting to Battersea’s Brydie Williams and Hazel Adams highlighting 140 years of caring for cats. Marking this landmark the aim is to raise awareness of the great cat welfare given, and millions of cats saved, rehabilitated, and re-homed.To celebrate this historic occasion, Battersea will mark it the only way they know how – by giving our feline friends the love we all know they deserve. Hazel and Brydie explain that over the next weeks and months, Battersea will share fur-filled stories of hope and happiness from their 140-year journey together, with a raft of stories and how they’ll be here for cats and their owners now and in the future. We chat about the differences between cats and dogs, the fact cats haven’t been studied as much as dogs and why just as with their dogs, great care is taken in placing cats in the new homes. Based in Piccadilly in the heart of London’s Theatreland and Soho, it's also home to very special dog friendly screenings. Amber has been instrumental in creating this extremely popular dog-centric cinematic experience. She chats about why as a dog owner herself she understands why fellow dog owners would prefer to go and see films with their dogs. Interestingly it's not to see Lassie or 101 Dalmatians, its the latest ‘blockbuster’ movies. We talk about how Anna’s own Mr Binks is a seasoned cinema goer, and how Prudence, Anna’s Bull terrier, went to see the multi-award winning Isle of Dogs, created in Hackney in London. Amber highlights the thought behind her project which includes a seat for your dog that’s included in the price for a single human seat. On entering the Auditorium dogs are offered their own blanket to keep their seat dog hair free, with fresh bowls of water dotted around for the dogs. There’s dog-friendly ice cream on offer, and of course dog-friendly popcorn too. We chat about the joyous spirit of these screening where like minded folk get together and celebrate their dogs. Its a chance to sharpen their training, as well as meet and greets. As Anna’s personally most favourite thing to do as an inspired concept taking dog friendly to new limit. What’s extraordinary is that the dogs really enjoy it and settle. In over six years there’s never been a complaint about dog hair or any allergic reactions! It has to be experienced to be believed! Later, Anna joins her friends Jo Good, Henry Brandman, and Caroline Brill, all with their dogs to see the Barbie Movie. He explains why it is not ‘illegal’ to invite dogs into a restaurant, so long as common sense prevails and there’s space to offer those not dog friendly to also feel relaxed. He also chats about his Labradoodle, Hudson, who left his legacy on the restaurant, always remembered through some artworks, and branding as being Martin’s inspiration to be so #DogFriendly. His young Labradoodle, named Wilbur and Mr Binks enjoyed meeting and recording in person too!M Restaurant Instagram: @mrestaurantsThank you to Pawable for their support and get 10% off your first order of collagen for your dog with the promo code ADOGSLIFE10. And make for happier more confident owners. We chat about the extras in Petli that allow you to delve into articles written by experts that can also de-mystify your dog’s behaviour, giving you a deeper understanding of what makes your dog tick. Ep 186Bonus: Paleo Ridge at the London Vet Show
bonusIn this special bonus episode Anna catches up Paleo Ridge at the London Vet Show, talking about why the company is supporting the Raw Feeding Vet Society RFVS at the event. In response to the demand from customers to learn more about feeding a whole food species appropriate diet, the RFVS were inundated with interest fromVets at the show. Grabbing a few minutes with Paleo Ridge’s Will Green and Esther Logue, we chatted about a shift in perceptions. As dog owners opt for healthier eating themselves, it's inevitable that pet parents are transferring their learning to their pets.Understanding the impact diet: ingredients that support and fuel at a cellular level, feeding a raw balanced complete diet to your dog is beneficial to their health. Over the years Anna has received a lot of antagonism from Vets on feeding an unprocessed, natural whole food diet, which she found very disappointing. As a canine nutritionist, Anna agrees with Paleo Ridge’s philosophy that by pre-empting health issues, is a way to keep dogs and their owners happy. Feeding ingredients that are bioavailable and nutrient dense - ‘Letting food be thy medicine (as Hippocrates said in 600BC), can transform health. Offering an exclusive Vet Club for practices, Paleo Ridge aims to educate!! Offering free advice, special packages and in-practice freezer options for vet practices. We touch on the myths around Raw Food Feeding, and why the RFVS want to help de-mystify such preconceptions and help Vets fulfill the demand from their customers. Over the years WAH has raised funds to set up vet services in regions like India where the stray dog population must be reduced for the welfare of dogs. With thousands of sterilisations, sending 5.5 tons of dog food, working with charities helping Ukrainian canine refugees. Helping with rabies vaccines, and parasite control, Nikki explains why WAH works collaboratively, and sustainably setting up practice clinics. Most recently WAH is partnering with food banks to help dog owners struggling to feed their dogs in the cost of living crisis. Nikki’s passion is to stop puppy farms, stop online sales, and promote adoption here in the UK with rescues brimful post pandemic. Ep 184Bonus: Help the XL Bullies
bonusAs an important midweek announcement, tune into our mid-week bulletin We’re joined by Amber Ellis @theofficialbullycoalition and Felix Robinson @PetTrustUk talking about the urgent fundraising appeal initiated by Sophie Coulthard @dontbanmelicensemeThe funds raised so far have allowed for Barrister John Cooper to be appointed and serve Thérèse Coffey, EFRA and DEFRA, with a Pre Action Protocol Letter in Judicial Review. The capital is to fund the Judicial Review on the XL Bully ban as the case proceeds. With a tight deadline, groups are campaigning to raise the remaining funds to ensure the suit goes forward. As part of the banning so many owners face the fact that the ban is based on measurements. Or as it stands there is only one measurement which is 19 inches or more in height. A chunky build, some wrinkles, and muscular shoulder blade are the definitions.Felix explains why she on realising this, and that her Boxer, Sammy, fits this ‘type’ measurement (as do millions of other breeds and mixes). Understanding the fear of going out with your dog Pet Trust UK has created a digital dog tag containing proof of insurance, exemption, vets, and a raft of other valuable information be in one place - making supplying proof of paperwork is simple in the event its needed. As a landmark situation years after the Dangerous Dogs Act has clearly not worked, the Judicial review will challenge its restrictions as breaking the Animal Welfare Act, and the Five Freedoms. It will also present the science behind why banning a breed is NOT the way forward, rather licensing, education, support at all levels in line with a nation of animal lovers. Ep 182Caroline Alupo
We’re joined by Caroline Alupo, a canine behavioural consultant with 18 years experience and a master's degree in Ethology. Specialising in PTSD in dogs, Caroline and I discuss how trauma affects dogs just as it does people. How dogs communicate their stress in different contexts and how to help overcome their fears. We chat about how science concurs children are deeply affected in some cases losing their imagination. We talk about diagnostic tools, prognosis and how tore-balance your dog. In the process we discuss how the bond between you and your dog gets stronger through building communication, focus, and trust.Discussing how emotional intelligence is now recognised in dogs, Caroline’s study underlines the importance of compassion and understanding that every dog is an individual. We chat about episodic memory and why contexts (similar to in people) can trigger reactions in dogs. Caroline is also the co-founder of the dog app called Petli. As a new and really useful App, I’m very excited to shout about it, and recommend that everyone takes a look.I know how many of us are intimidated by dog training classes, worry we might be the worst in the room, anticipate reactions from your dog and more. That’s part of the reason why Petli is so good - it offers pet parents the chance to train their dogs in their own time, either to practice in-between training classes, or to top up your training in an older dog. The App is skilfully designed to put the fun back into dog training. It takes steps very slowly in precise increments, so your dog learns the cues and you learn to become adept at understanding your own individual dogs limits of concentration, and of course what works best as the reward. Ep 181Ira Moss Returns
This week we’re joined by Ira Moss, CEO of All Dogs Matter, London’s independent re-homing charity. We discuss the situation in rescue with XL Bully types, being abandoned since the news of the XL Bully imminent ban. Ira explains that when the breed is banned it will be illegal for rescues to re-home these dogs and they will face euthanasia. One of Ira’s bugbears is buying dogs online, as a recently new phenomenon which are a shop window for puppy farmers and make it far too easy for anyone to buy a dog. And sell them when the dog is wanted. We talk about French Bulldogs and why ADM is overloaded with ex breeding bitch Frenchies, and others that have behavioural issues making them undesirable and abandoned. We agree that so much needs to be changed in the world of dogs, where pooches have become commodities and the ‘must-have' accessory. We also chat about cats and how they’re being abandoned with cat rescues also full to the brim! Ep 179The Terrier Tax
We’re joined by Vet and Environmentalist, Andrew Prentis, who joins us the day after 2023 was declared the hottest day on record. We discuss why pet ownership should become more sustainable. Referencing that a Labrador emits more C02 in its lifetime than an average 4 x 4, and the fact that dogs and cats consume 20% of the world’s meat supply. Highlighting that pets help with companionship, physical exercise, mindfulness, and so much more, that surely the carbon paw-print is sustainable from a societal perspective compared to air travel, buildings’ emissions, and industry. Andrew postulates that dogs and cats could become Vegan, and that its time to choose smaller dog breeds. We also discuss the ’Terrier Tax’ where treats, chews and accessories for small dogs are often priced the same as for bigger dog versions - a smart move by food firms? Do we need all these accessories for dogs? Is capitalism getting in the way of pets’ welfare and the need to shift to more sustainable options? Ep 177Banning the American XL Bully
This week we’re joined by Animal Psychologist, Dr Roger Mugford, discussing the recent ban of the American XL Bully. We chat about Dr Roger’s experience in 1991 when the knee jerk Dangerous Dogs Act legislation was introduced. Designed to keep the public safe from dog bites and incidents, evidence is clear that the law has simply not worked. Dog bites increase to rise, at a record high earlier this year, up 34% since 2019, and with 18 deaths caused by dogs in the past 18 months. The XL Bully being accountable for eight of these tragic mortalities. Government's decision to ban the the XL Bully type is a massive concern as Dr Roger explains, the XL Bully is a ’designer crossbreed’, a mix of four or five different breeds. Therefore they vary in size, head shape, ear carriage and a mix of a boxer crossed Labrador could be mistaken for one of this ‘type’. Hundreds of innocent dogs could be ‘seized’ and separated from their owners until proved by DNA either not guilty or euthanised. Also these ‘types’ are now being abandoned to rescues that imminently are not able to re-home dogs as defined by the DDA, meaning these dogs will be put to sleep. As Dr Roger reiterates having been an Expert Witness for hundreds of dogs in court, banning a breed is not the solution, the only way forward is better accountability for dogs through education and regulating ownership. Dogs are man’s best friend and should not be discriminated against by how the look, or pay the price for inexperienced owners or those exploiting a dogs’ strength for illegal dog fighting and intimidation. Talking to us from NYC where he moved from London, we chat about the differences in dogs and their people across the pond, but why commissioning a unique piece of art is still considered a ’must have’ for dog owners. As one of the first artists to focus on dogs back in 2010, Robert’s first A-Z of dog breeds was exhibited in the Rebecca Hossack Gallery in 2012. We chat about one of Anna’s most coveted possessions, a portrait by Robert of Molly her first Miniature Bull Terrier painted in 2011. It’s Robert’s style that brings every dog to life using a canvas and the structure of paint and colour to capture a dog’s unique personality. Having studied at St Martins, Robert is no stranger to a range of subjects and projects not least his latest A-Z project looking at Montauk in New York state, south of Long Island. We chat about his up-coming new A-Z of dogs, which will be created and available to buy in time for Christmas. As an update to his original A-Z of dogs circa 2012, this will highlight the shift in breed popularity to include more doodles. We calling out to A DOG’S LIFE listeners to contact Robert with your ideas for the new A-Z (watch this space on Instagram). And of course to get your order in time for Christmas!Robert's website and InstagramIf you love A Dog's Life and would like to help support the show why not become a Patreon backer where you can also have access to some exclusive content. Ep 171Flop Not Crop!
This week we’re joined by Jordan Shelley, Behaviour & Training animal welfare expert. We chat about his campaign Flop Not Crop and how he has raised awareness about the cruelty of cropping dogs' ears, which is illegal in the UK. Stopping nasty ear cropping kits (legal in the USA), from entering the UK by banning their sales online to the UK, and helping to curb this barbaric ‘fashion’ trend in certain breeds. We talk about re-introducing the dog licence and Jordan discusses his role at Animal Licensing Wales. We also discussed banning sales of dogs and live animals on the internet and the huge disappointment in the shelving of the Animal welfare (Kept Bill), and the impact of this in terms of dog welfare in the UK. We chat about the XL Bully and why adding this ‘breed’ onto the Dangerous Dogs list won’t really make any difference to reducing dog bite incidents, rather it lies in more education and a centralised approach. Ep 170Trained Puppies Don't Bite Children
This week we're joined by Trainer & Behaviour expert, and Groomer, Deidre Ryan, whose book Trained Puppies Don’t Bite Children has to be the best dog training book Anna's read for years! Simply laid out in 100 short chapters with perfect illustrations, the book is based on the principles of the Sunday Times bestselling book “French children don’t throw food” by Pamela Druckerman. Deidre explains why she noticed she was raising her children in a similar way to how Deidre had raised her own five dogs. She realised that there were many parallels when it came to raising puppies and decided to write a no-nonsense approach for pet parents. We discuss the term pet parents and concur we are dog owners. Nevertheless in her book Deidre explains: "in the parenting book there is a ‘cadre’- a framework for how children are expected to behave. It combines “a little bit of strictness, with a lot of freedom”. My dogs are allowed lots of off leash freedom on walks, but I insist on a strong un-negotiable recall. We also talk about the animal welfare crisis in Ireland and how Deidre is supporting Dog Advocacy Ireland.Buy the bookDeidre's websiteIf you love A Dog's Life and would like to help support the show why not become a Patreon backer where you can also have access to some exclusive content.
