The Therapeutic Goods Administration has approved Wegovy as the first medication to treat MASH, a severe form of fatty liver disease affecting one in three Australian adults and one in ten children. The disease can progress to liver failure and liver cancer, and until now had no approved drug therapies beyond lifestyle interventions. The Federal Government is considering whether to subsidise the medication on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme amid concerns about cost, supply and potential side effects.
