Victoria's free public transport policy, introduced as a cost-of-living measure worth $71 million, is set to end on 30 April with the Allan government refusing to commit to an extension. Sydney Metro is boosting services with three new trains temporarily diverted from the unopened south-west line, reducing wait times to three and a half minutes and increasing peak capacity to nearly 40,000 passengers per hour. The enhanced Sydney services will run from today until 7 June to meet surging demand as commuters shift from cars to public transport.
