Ben Roberts-Smith, a former Afghanistan war hero and Victoria Cross recipient, has been arrested at Sydney Airport on alleged war crimes charges. The 47-year-old is accused of at least six murders of unarmed Afghanistan detainees during the war, including allegedly ordering subordinates to carry out killings. The arrest follows a 2020 Inspector-General report that found credible information of war crimes committed by the Australian Defence Force in Afghanistan between 2005 and 2016, leading to a five-year investigation by the Office of the Special Investigator.
