Dezi Freeman, a police killer and self-described sovereign citizen, was shot dead by police after more than seven months on the run. The incident occurred at a rural property near the New South Wales-Victoria border following a standoff during which Freeman failed to surrender. Police had him under observation for several days before the confrontation, using a BEAR cat (Ballistic Engineered Armoured Rescue Vehicle) in an attempt to force him from a shipping container.
