The state government is introducing a new regulation standard requiring manufacturers to contribute to a recycling scheme for small and removable batteries under five kilograms, particularly lithium-ion batteries. The initiative aims to reduce the risk of fires caused by batteries, with an accompanying education campaign warning people never to dispose of batteries in regular bins. Energy Minister Penny Sharpe announced the measures as part of efforts to prevent battery-related fires.
