A Los Angeles jury has found Meta and Google guilty of negligence in designing their social media platforms, ruling that Instagram, Facebook and YouTube contributed to depression and anxiety in a young woman who became addicted to the apps as a child. The jury awarded the now 20-year-old woman $3 million US dollars in damages and imposed an additional $3 million in fines against the tech giants. Both companies plan to appeal the landmark decision, which could pave the way for thousands of similar legal challenges.
