The Liberal opposition has announced an election policy to introduce a new criminal charge for drivers who initiate police pursuits, carrying penalties of up to three years in jail for first offences and five years for repeat offenders. Police chases in the state have risen to almost 1,000 per year, with drivers failing to stop reaching their highest level in a decade. The policy also includes greater legal protections for police officers involved in pursuits that end in crashes, though the government claims similar laws already exist.
