The secret, yet famed program of "illegals" produced a rather unique kind of spies for Soviet Union - and it turns out, for Vladimir Putin's Russia too - who worked for years deep undercover, posing as foreigners and hiding their real identity not just from their neighbors in the West where they were primarily planted but sometimes even from their own children. Despite the significant costs including the psychological traumas, the program seems to have found new purpose in the recent years and nobody can be quite sure how many illegals are still out there.
