แม้ปัจจุบันจะมีสิ่งอื่นที่สามารถทดแทนการเขียนได้ค่อนข้างมาก แต่งานวิจัยชี้ว่าการเขียนจะช่วยกระตุ้นระบบตื่นตัว Reticular Activating System (RAS) ซึ่งเปรียบเสมือนตัวกรองข้อมูล โดยหากเป็นข้อมูลสำคัญก็จะส่งสัญญาณไปยังสมองให้ตอบสนองต่อสิ่งนั้นด้วยการตั้งสมาธิ ทำให้จดจำได้ดีขึ้น นานขึ้น และสามารถต่อยอดไอเดียได้มากขึ้น
