Are you sure God called you to do this?

A college student wants to know if I've always been sure about doing what God has called me to do. And the answer is Yes - I've always been pretty clear about my call, even though my work has changed many times. Our work can change even while our call remains the same. Other questions this week: Did you ever have doubts about what God's plan for your life was? What would you say to someone who thinks that they are "too deep" in their "work" (job) to make a drastic change to turn their life into "Work You Love," How do you personally NOT "separate your work and worship," as stated in the book? What if, as a college student, you can't seem to find "work that you love" in a company, do you choose not work for that company? (despite that maybe you currently can't find another option?) What do I do when everything that I am 'good' at is not anything that I can make a decent living off of? How can I share my happiness when everyone else is so sad?

Edward asks how he can share his happiness when everyone around seems so pessimistic and depressed. Dan unpacks how sometimes we need to just live out our happiness rather than forcing others to hear about it. Your enthusiasm will make some of them curious enough to ask. And in the meantime, find people who will cheer you on - those who may be even farther ahead than you. Questions This Week: I am 661/2 and am thinking I am ready for retirement BUT I don't want to retire yet as my youngest son is attending Texas A&M and has two years remaining in his field as geologist. To make money do something meaningless…

A listener writes: "I have a near hatred towards people that talk about enjoying their lives and their work. Work seems to be a burden for the whole lot of us. Nothing that has purpose makes a profit, and nothing that makes a profit has purpose. If there are any exceptions to that, I would like to know. To make money, you have to do something meaningless at best. Am I missing something?" In this episode Dan unpacks these very common questions. Episode #624 August 10, 2018 Hi, this is Dan Miller – and yes you're listening to the 48 Days Radio show – where each week we take 48 minutes to dive into real life questions about finding your passion, deciding what kind of life you want to live – and then finding or creating work that allows you to show up every day, excited to be able to do something that is meaningful, fulfilling – and profitable. This is where normal, indecision and ambiguity come to die. Welcome to the 48 Days Radio Show. Questions: 1. I have a near hatred towards people that talk about enjoying their lives and their work 2. Work seems to be a burden for the whole lot of us, with the only driving hope being the idea of more money "one day". 3. Nothing that has purpose makes a profit, and nothing that makes a profit has purpose. 4. To make money, you have to do something meaningless at best. Quotation: "To each there comes in their lifetime a special moment when they are figuratively tapped on the shoulder and offered the chance to do a very special thing, unique to them and fitted to their talents. What a tragedy if that moment finds them unprepared or unqualified for that which could have been their finest hour." ― Winston S. Churchill Call to Action – What are you doing now that blends passion, talent and money? Notes: Dan shares a Bible passage from Ecclesiastes 2:17-23 that is eerily similar to this listener's question. As Dan found out more about this listener, he is 42, married with two kids, a strong Christian and does high-end residential remodeling and construction. Dan shares the trifecta of Vocation, Career and Job. Vocation is the largest component and the element you want to identify first. It is what you want to accomplish. Career is a subset of vocation and job is the smallest component. Dan shares an example of his cousin who is very successful in the construction industry and has been able to use that as the fuel for his passion and purpose of flying supplies to Haiti. He also shares his own experiences as a used car salesman and how he found purpose and passion in that work. Dan shares his own purpose statement and some of the ways he aligns that to his passion. For example, creating a library of books about finding work you love for a welfare to work organization in Kansas City. The story of Steve Askinosie, a criminal defense attorney who found his passion by visiting local hospitals. Find his book: Meaningful Work here. Questions to ask yourself to discover your passion (from Wisdom Meets Passion). The Three Legged Stool: Passion, Talent and Money. Your sweet spot is where those three things come together. Dan shares a recent example of a client who lost his job and shared with him his love of golf clubs. He's now exploring expanding his "side job" of buying and selling golf clubs into a job he loves. In this episode I talk about the futility of looking for investors before you have some level of success. If you have an invention – sell 1000 and then you'll have a basis for getting investors. If you are a software developer, develop something that 1500 people sign up for with a monthly fee. If you're an author, write a book and sell 2000 copies – then publishers will talk to you about your next one. If you're an artist and you're looking for investors, show them pictures of the last 20 pieces you sold. Finding money is not your challenge – producing something that people will pay for is your first step. Episode #608 April 20, 2018 Hi, this is Dan Miller – and yes you're listening to the 48 Days Radio show – where each week we take 48 minutes to dive into real life questions about finding your passion, deciding what kind of life you want to live – and then finding or creating work that allows you to show up every day, excited to be able to do something that is meaningful, fulfilling – and profitable. This is where normal, indecision and ambiguity come to die. Welcome to the 48 Days Radio Show. Questions: 1. I need an investor for my idea 2. Is it possible to think you hated your job but then learn to love it with new management in place? 3. Do you think there's a market for Good News? 4. Is it realistic to expect to monetize my podcast? The choices we make – with Joanne Miller

Episode #607 April 13, 2018 People seem to be in a lot of despair. They feel like they don't have choices. Dan's wife Joanne joins him on this week's podcast and shares some of the trials and tribulations of their life and how the choices they've made have impacted them. Hi, this is Dan Miller – and yes you're listening to the 48 Days Radio show. In this episode I invited Joanne to join me in responding to the flood of messages we're getting from listeners who feel trapped by their circumstances. Welcome to the 48 Days Radio Show. Questions: 1. How much choice do we have in the kind of lives we live? 2. What happens if you don't even have the support of a spouse? 3. Where do those whom nobody cares about fit in this? 4. I am 58 and have gotten nowhere in life. When will my turn ever come? 5. I would like to hear any encouragement from experiences of people you might know who hit bottom in every area of life and they went forward. Questions from Dan: What Choices Have You Made? Did you choose the house you're living in? Did you choose the job you have now? Did you choose the car you're driving? Did you choose the college you went to or whether to go to college? Did you choose the person you married? Comfort is the enemy of progress. P. T. Barnum From The Greatest Showman Click To Tweet Call to Action: What choices are you making right now? Resources: Dan Miller's Top 10 Recommended Books – If there is one thing that has fueled my own success it is the books I have read. I continue a heavy reading schedule and will until the day I die because the wisdom of the ages is so readily available for any of us – it's a shame to not take advantage of it. I am asked repeatedly what books I recommend. So here are 10 suggestions for 2018. You'll notice these are not all business or money-making books, but I truly believe that financial success is a byproduct of personal success. If you want to get rich, work on developing YOU! 1. Frankl, Viktor. Man's Search for Meaning. A classic work by a concentration camp prisoner that shows that even when everything else is taken away, we have the ability to choose. I read this one about every six months just to remind myself of what is really important. 2. Gire, Ken. Windows of the Soul. One of my favorite books ever. A gentle guide to help us see God in new ways. I believe it opens our eyes to see more opportunities all around us in the process. A timeless classic. 3. Quindlen, Anna. A Short Guide to a Happy Life. What does it take to really live deeply and successfully, rather than to just exist? This little book puts in perspective those things we often consider to be too important. 4. Schwartz, David. The Magic of Thinking Big. Workable methods for thinking big. How to create your own "good luck." The book that put coach Lou Holtz on the road to extraordinary success. 5. Carnegie, Dale. How to Win Friends & Influence People. This is the classic little book on creating great relationships and building trust with others. 6. Ziglar, Zig. See You at the Top. This book is full of easy to understand principles for any age. We used it as a text book for homeschooling our children. 7. Hill, Napoleon. Think and Grow Rich. I'm sure you've heard of this one. The principles are as true today as they were in 1937. I value this book so much I have an original copy. 8. Lapin, Rabbi Daniel. Thou Shall Prosper. Nothing has shaped my thinking on a healthy Biblical perspective on money as much as this book. 9. Conwell, Russell. Acres of Diamonds. I love this little story about discovering that the opportunities for our greatest success are often right under our nose. Get a digital version here FREE when you sign up for Dan's weekly inspiration and tips on finding or creating work you love. 10. Canfield, Jack. The Success Principles. An incredible compilation of 64 success principles from the co-author of the Chicken Soup for the Soul series. Dan & Joanne's Decision Making Process: Joanne and I have used a concise process for all the years of our marriage. When confronted with a decision, we allow a 2-week maximum for arriving at a decision. Whether it is where to move, what kind of car to purchase, making a career or business decision, or how to handle a difficult relationship with a relative, we approach the process as follows: 1. State the problem. 2. Get the advice and opinions of others. 3. List the alternatives. 4. Choose the best alternative. 5. Act. And we avoid the crippling power of indecision. Yes, this process must be bathed in prayer. But a daily walk of integrity and character should provide confiden

The 2 or 3 things you did that you had never done before? Concerts, art shows, seminars, workshops or other enriching experiences you attended? 2 or 3 specific things you did to strengthen the relationships that mean the most to you?
