Listener Mailbag: Narrative Podcasting

This week: a listener mailbag. Host Jay Acunzo and producer Andrea Muraskin answer your questions, with a particular focus on narrative-style podcasting. Topics include resources for learning the craft, how to face down an edit, and how to research guests. Plus: is there a measurable benefit to making a narrative podcast as opposed to an interview show? Big thanks goes out to everyone who submitted questions. We’re going to keep doing these, so send your questions on any aspect of podcasting to Jay on Twitter: https://twitter.com/jayacunzo/, or email [email protected]. By The Book: The Structure of Incredible Episodes (ft. Kristen Meinzer)

On this episode we are so excited to feature podcasting superstar (or as we say on the show, superhero!) Kristen Meinzer. And we’re breaking down By the Book—the hit show Kristen co-created and co-hosts with Joleta Greenberg—which is going into its eighth season! Kristen brings her wealth of knowledge as someone who’s been in the industry for over a decade; who’s hosted, produced, and created numerous shows; and who’s written the must-read book for podcast creators: So You Want to Start a Podcast: Finding Your Voice, Telling Your Story, and Building a Community That Will Listen. Host Jay Acunzo and Kristen get into many key topics, like why structure is a must, ways to connect with your audience, how to deal with listener criticism, and why you should focus on your show’s content instead of obsessing over your microphone—and more. Standing Ovation: The Power of a Hook (ft. Jay Baer)

The show we’re discussing with Jay, Standing Ovation, is kind of like 3 Clips, but for public speaking. Each episode, Jay interviews a public speaker and together they break down a favorite story that the guest tells on stage - with clips from those talks. Jay Baer knows a thing or two about podcasting, both from the three shows he hosts and the shows he’s helped other companies launch through his business, Convince and Convert. On 3 Clips, he shares tips on how to ask guests questions they’ve never been asked before, the importance of signaling key lessons to your audience, and how to distill those lessons from your guest. In Those Genes: Using Story and Sound to Make Complexity Delightful (ft. Janina Jeff and Sam Riddell)

If there was a podcasting cookbook, you could imagine a variety of chapters: shows about culture, science shows, comedy podcasts, etc. For example, for a culture show "recipe," you might take one host, add two commentators, sprinkle in a bunch of sound bites from the media, and add a generous helping of music. But the podcast we’re featuring in this episode has a recipe you won’t find in any cookbook: mixing science, culture, music, history and comedy in one delicious dish. In Those Genes is an award-winning show “that uses genetics to decode the lost histories of African descendants through the lens of Black culture.” It’s the brainchild of Janina Jeff, a geneticist and public speaker whose pitch was selected out of 18,000 (!!) for Spotify’s Sound Up Bootcamp. Also joining us is Sam Riddell, an independent media producer in charge of coaching Janina and spicing up the audio with music, movie clips, sound effects and more. You’ll hear how Janina and Sam make the complex simple, tackle sensitive topics around race and racism, and have a whole lot of fun on the way. Talking Too Loud (and Thinking Deeply About Podcasting, with Chris Savage & Sylvie Lubow)

On this episode of 3 Clips, we learn how Chris and Sylvie worked to remove the barrier between who you are, and who's coming through on the microphone - and techniques to get your guests to do the same. Jay, Sylvie and Chris also discuss following your curiosity as an interviewer and why audio, compared to video, can be liberating. Wistia (as you may know if you listen to this show often) is a software company focused on video and podcasting marketing, analytics, and audience growth. Talking Too Loud is a show about entrepreneurship that doesn’t simply have founders stop by to talk about their success stories. Instead, it focuses on the tough problems behind building a business that have no black-and-white answers -- the gray, the nuance, the messiness.SUBSCRIBE TO JAY'S NEWSLETTER: Every week in Playing Favorites, Jay Acunzo shares a new idea or story exclusive to subscribers about making things that make a difference. She also talks about how she navigated rising to the occasion when the stakes got high: Kristen was told just days into her new job at Shopify that she’d be taking over the podcast hosting duties from Harley Finklestein, the company’s president. And then she learned that he’d be her first interview guest for the show. Talk about pressure! A key component to Kristen’s, and by extension the show’s, success is how much thought went into developing the show’s premise. Also critical is that Kristen has a deep understanding of the retail world and she is actively involved in the community she serves. In other words, she knows who her audience is and the type of information they will benefit from, and then she goes and gets it. Resilient Retail launched in October of 2020 and is a twice-weekly interview show that focuses on the world of retail, with a particular focus on serving small business owners trying to figure out the online space. Resilient Retail also has a YouTube channel and a robust five-year growth plan that extends far beyond the podcast. Please join 3 Clips host and Marketing Showrunners founder Jay Acunzo as he talks with Kristen about all that she has learned and how she’s applying that to create just the right kind of interview show that will serve her growing audience.INTRODUCING GROWABLE SHOWS, a new on-demand course about show development from Jay:https://jayacunzo.com/growable-showsJOIN THE NEWSLETTER: Subscribe to “Playing Favorites,” Jay Acunzo’s weekly email, and get 1 new concept or technique every Friday morning to help you create your audience’s favorite things: marketingshowrunners.com/subscribe/. How to Talk to [Mamí & Papí ] About Anything: IP Extensions, Intuition, & Process (ft. Juleyka Lantigua-Williams)

Juleyka has worked behind the scenes in various capacities on many hit shows, including 70 Million, Latina to Latina, Driving the Green Book, Marvel’s Voices, Code Switch, and more Her depth of experience merged in a flash to become one of her newest hits: How to Talk to [Mamí & Papí] About Anything. The show went from idea to launch in just three weeks, but of course it took Juleyka’s years of work in podcasting to make something like that possible. This show is personal, which is why Juleyka cast herself in a role she wouldn’t normally choose: she’s the show host and narrator. How to Talk to [Mamí & Papí] About Anything addresses issues that adult children of immigrant parents may have a hard time talking to their parents about. Juleyka herself is from the Domincan Republic and moved to the US when she was 10, so she makes the perfect stand-in for her audience, because she is the audience. In each episode, a guest shares a testimonial of an issue they face, and this is followed by an interview between Juleyka and an expert in the field, where they discuss the issue at hand. Most importantly, the show is resonating with listeners. In this episode, join 3 Clips host and Marketing Showrunners founder Jay Acunzo as he talks with Juleyka Lantigua Williams about the large and small choices that make How to Talk to [Mamí & Papí] About Anything a success - and how it was the perfect combination of Juleyka following her well-honed instincts and tapping into her high tolerance for risk that made it happen.JOIN THE NEWSLETTER: Subscribe to “Playing Favorites,” Jay Acunzo’s weekly email, and get 1 new concept or technique every Friday morning to help you create your audience’s favorite things: marketingshowrunners.com/subscribe/. CONFLICTED: The Process Driving Jaw-Dropping Shows

When journalist Jake Warren met Aimen Dean -- a former Al Qaeda bomb-maker turned agent for the British intelligence service MI6, who happened to be super smart and deeply knowledgeable about Middle East politics -- he knew he had hit storytelling pay dirt. So when Jake started his own podcasting company a few years later, he was determined to get Aimen behind the mic. But there were a couple of problems: the guy could talk for nine hours, and would sometimes get pretty deep in the weeds. So they brought in Thomas Small -- an author, documentary film producer, Middle East scholar, and good friend of Aimen’s - to be co host. The resulting podcast, CONFLICTED, from Jake’s company Message Heard, breaks down the complexities of history, religion and politics of the Middle East and puts them in a global context. The first season begins with 9/11 and focuses on the War on Terror and associated conflicts in the region. The second season is about the post-Cold War New World Order and how that era of US dominance affected the Middle East, and beyond. To the listener, it sounds like Thomas and Aimen are having a friendly conversation, sprinkled with Aimen’s often heart-stopping personal stories. But as you’ll hear, there’s lots of work that goes on behind the scenes to get to this place. In this episode, join 3 Clips host and Marketing Showrunners founder Jay Acunzo as he talks with Jake Warren about the large and small choices that make CONFLICTED a success - not only with Middle East politics nerds, but among a general audience too.NEWSLETTER:Subscribe to “Playing Favorites,” the newsletter from Jay Acunzo and Marketing Showrunners, exploring creativity, content, marketing, and making someone's favorite podcast.
