BERTHA BENZ'S FAMOUS FIRST RIDE: Karl Benz is an enginnering genius who is credited for giving us the first gasoline powered automobile, which he patented in 1885. But it didn't become famous until his wife Bertha decided to take it on a 90 kilometer (65 mile) road trip with their two sons. That was marketing genius, because the car now had a purpose- family road trips!
