Ken Ward, returning to the team's quarters after his fight with Graves, is confronted by Coach Worry, who asks him how his face got banged up. Graves appears a few minutes later in worse shape and gets a tongue-lashing from Worry.

The team plays an overconfident State University team and teaches them some lessons. After the game, the coach warns the team of their only weakness- that of every man on the team adhering to the rules of curfew and rules regarding no smoking/no drinking. But one player is going against the grain- and Ken calls him out.

In part two the travelers are growing more and more resentful of Boule de Suif as she continues to say no to the German officer- and they concoct devious ways to try to convince her that it is her patriotic duty to give in. Featured here: "La Marseilles" (near end), is the National Anthem of France. the song was written in 1792 by Claude Joseph Roget de Lisle in Strasbourg after the declaration of of war by France against Austria and was and is considered a patriotic war song. First published in April of 1880, "Boule de Suif" is one of Maupassant's most famous and important stories. The term 'Boule de Suif' is most often translated as "Dumpling" or "Ball of Lard". The use of this no longer acceptable term for bigness was prevalent in those days and society's upper crust felt no guilt in using it in the presence of persons they thought of as coming from a lower class. In this story a carriage load of persons escaping the German occupation of their city of Rouen, France are traveling to Havre where they believe their French countrymen are still in control.. The division of classes evident throughout the trip allows Maupassant to hand a stinging rebuke to the ills of French society at the time, as one of the passengers, a courtesan, meaning a prostitute, is nicknamed 'Boule de Suif'. A young man who has just lost his father and needs to support his mother tries to find work but no one, inluding his own uncle, will hire him due to his deceased father's bad reputation as a shirker. Finally a local farmer offers the young man a job to clear an entire field of elderberries down to the roots for a pittance, provided he finishes the job. The young man has nowhere else to turn and accepts the offer.

Two brothers who own a successful clock/watch shop in Paris are surprised when a disreputable looking man enters the shop- and they both believe has has come to case the shop before robbing it. They contact the police, and the police question the man, but come up with nothing. Things turn bad for the brothers soon after.
