Sometimes when we are talking about consciousness in the universe and things like the Observer Effect in Quantum Physics, there arises the temptation to think that our consciousness is somehow as powerful as the source of creation and that we can eventually know everything. That kind of hubris is very dangerous because it denies the Mystery of creation. As Kurt Gödel proved, there will never be a complete and consistent description of the universe using mathematical logic. The true nature and spirit of alchemy is revealed by going back in time to a medieval laboratory and discovering the deeper meaning of the processess and operations taking place in the lab and in the mind of the alchemist.

Alchemists believed that no transformation—whether in the laboratory, in the body, or in the soul—could succeed without the presence of a mysterious ingredient known as the Materia Prima (First Matter). Nothing was more important to alchemist’s work than this energetic essence, which they believed could be extracted from nature and rendered tangible and visible. This lecture examines the nature and properties of the elusive First Matter. Hauck explains how the concept of the First Matter evolved in both the scientific and Hermetic traditions to become a fundamental, although often unrecognized, tenet of both modern Hermeticism and modern physics.
